SSKB Strata Series: Smoke Alarms Compliance Evening

Brisbane

9 June, 2026

The Brisbane edition of the SSKB Strata Series brought together committee members and building managers for what proved to be a fully booked and engaging evening dedicated to Queensland’s upcoming smoke alarm legislation changes. As the final in-person instalment of the smoke alarm compliance series, the night carried a sense of occasion — and those who braved the rain to attend were rewarded with an information-packed session that gave them the tools and confidence to act ahead of the 2027 deadline.

Hosted by SSKB’s Brendan McGrath as MC and joined by SSKB strata expert Peter Todd, the evening once again welcomed Smoke Alarms Australia’s Ante and Dylan, whose expertise has proven invaluable across the series. Together, the panel guided attendees through the legislative requirements, the responsibilities that fall to committees and building managers, and the practical steps strata communities can begin taking now to ensure their schemes are fully prepared and compliant before the deadline arrives.

The atmosphere throughout the evening was one of genuine engagement, with a packed room keen to make the most of direct access to industry experts. Attendees took full advantage of the opportunity to ask their burning questions, and the discussion that followed each segment of the presentation reflected just how important this topic is to those responsible for managing strata communities. No question was too big or too small — the experts were on hand to provide real, considered answers to the challenges committees are facing on the ground.

What set the Brisbane evening apart was the depth of insight shared by the presenters. Ante and Dylan drew on their own real-life experiences in the field, sharing case studies that illustrated not just the what and the how of the legislation changes, but the why. Hearing firsthand accounts of situations where early action made a meaningful difference — and where delayed compliance created significant challenges — gave attendees a grounded and practical understanding of the stakes involved. Peter Todd added valuable strata-specific context, helping committees understand how their obligations intersect with the day-to-day management of their schemes and the wellbeing of their communities.

A key theme of the evening was the importance of proactive committee involvement. With the 2027 deadline drawing closer, committees have a real opportunity to lead from the front — working alongside lot owners to ensure individual lots meet compliance requirements, rather than waiting for issues to arise. The message was clear: a compliant community is a safer community, and the steps taken now by engaged, informed committees will make a lasting difference for every resident within their scheme.

As the final in-person event in the smoke alarm compliance series, the Brisbane evening marked an important milestone for SSKB’s ongoing commitment to education and support across the strata community. The conversations that continued well beyond the formal presentation were a testament to the value attendees found in the evening — and to the dedication of those who showed up, rain and all, to do right by their communities. SSKB thanks Brendan, Peter, Ante and Dylan for bringing their knowledge, passion and real-world experience to what was a truly memorable close to this series.
