As Cyclone Alfred approaches Southeast Queensland and Northern NSW, expected to make landfall on Thursday, 6th March, now is the time to take essential precautions to protect yourself, your family, and your property.
How to Prepare in the Next 2-3 Days
To minimise risk and damage, ensure you complete the following:
🔺 Secure outdoor items – Bring in or firmly secure loose furniture, garden items, and decorations to prevent them from becoming airborne hazards.
🔺 Check drains and gutters – Clear out any blockages to reduce the risk of flooding.
🔺 Prepare emergency contacts – Save key emergency numbers on your phone and write them down in case of power outages.
🔺 Plan for power outages – Fully charge your phone and power banks, and have backup lighting such as torches and candles.
🔺 Stock up on essentials – Ensure you have enough food, water, and medical supplies for at least 3–5 days.
🔺 Review your insurance and important documents – Keep digital copies in cloud storage and physical copies in a waterproof container.
🔺 Know your evacuation plan – Familiarise yourself with local evacuation routes and shelters.
What to Include in Your Emergency Kit
Having an emergency kit ready can make all the difference during a severe weather event. Ensure you have the following:
🔺 Drinking water (at least 10L per person)
🔺 Non-perishable food and a manual can opener
🔺 Torches and spare batteries
🔺 Battery-powered radio (to stay informed during power outages)
🔺 First aid kit and essential medications
🔺 Mobile phone power bank
🔺 Important documents (ID, insurance, emergency contacts) in a waterproof container
🔺 Cash (in case ATMs and card payments are unavailable)
🔺 Extra clothing, blankets, and sturdy footwear
