Staying Safe During the Cyclone

Cyclones can be unpredictable and dangerous, bringing destructive winds, heavy rain, and potential flooding. Preparing in advance and knowing what to do during and after the storm is crucial for ensuring your safety.

During the Cyclone

Stay Inside

Under no circumstances should you go outside. Even if the cyclone appears to have calmed, it may just be the eye of the storm, and powerful winds can return suddenly.

Find a Safe Space

The safest places in your apartment are small, enclosed rooms without windows, such as a bathroom, laundry, or hallway. Use mattresses, cushions, or blankets for extra protection.

Avoid Windows & Glass Doors

Stay away from windows, glass doors, and balconies. Strong winds can shatter glass, creating dangerous flying debris.

Keep Emergency Supplies Close

Ensure you have essential emergency supplies within reach, including:

  • Torch and extra batteries
  • Drinking water
  • Non-perishable food
  • First aid kit
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Fully charged mobile phone (use sparingly to conserve battery in case of power outages)

Listen for Emergency Updates

Tune in to official sources such as the Bureau of Meteorology, SES, and local government alerts via radio, TV, or mobile apps. Turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to conserve battery power.

Be Prepared for Power Outages

Cyclones often disrupt power, water, and internet services. Take these precautions:

  • Use torches or battery-powered lanterns instead of candles to reduce fire risk.
  • Unplug electrical devices to prevent damage from power surges.
  • If water supply is cut, use stored water wisely.

Secure Interior Doors

Keep all doors closed and locked to prevent strong winds from forcing them open.

Stay Calm & Support Others

If you live with others, remain together in the safest area. If you are alone, check in with family or friends via text when possible.

After the Cyclone Passes

Wait for the Official All-Clear

Do not leave your apartment until emergency services confirm it is safe. Winds may return suddenly, and airborne debris can still be hazardous.

Watch for Gas & Electrical Hazards

  • If you smell gas or see electrical sparks, turn off the power (if safe) and contact emergency services immediately.
  • Do not turn on electricity if water has entered your apartment until an electrician has checked it.

Avoid Using Lifts

Use stairs instead, as power failures or water damage may affect lifts.

Stay Away from Floodwaters

Floodwaters can contain hidden dangers, including:

  • Debris and sharp objects
  • Contaminated sewage and chemicals
  • Live electrical currents from downed power lines

Check for Damage

Once it is safe, inspect your apartment and report any issues to your Building Manager or Strata Committee. Take photos for documentation. Look for:

  • Cracked walls or ceilings
  • Leaks or flooding
  • Exposed electrical wires
  • Broken glass or debris

Be Aware of Unstable Structures

Fallen trees, loose debris, and weakened buildings may still pose a risk.

Wear Protective Gear

Use waterproof gloves and sturdy footwear when cleaning up debris.

Emergency Services Prioritise Critical Situations

SES, police, and fire departments will assist those in life-threatening situations first. Only call emergency services for urgent needs.

Arranging Emergency Make-Safe Repairs

If the property has sustained damage, emergency or make-safe repairs (electrical and structural) should be carried out as soon as possible to ensure safety and prevent further loss.
