SSKB’s Cyclone Response: An Update from our Team

For many of you in Cyclone Alfred’s path, the past week has been challenging, and it may take some time to fully return to normal. Following the cyclone, a dedicated team of around a dozen SSKB staff worked throughout the weekend to support you and help get the insurance claims process underway.

To date, we have processed approximately 300 insurance claims, with water ingress being the primary contributor to the volume of claims. However, most of the damage was caused by strong wind gusts exceeding 100km/h. The Gold Coast and Brisbane areas were among the hardest hit.

We observed that some buildings had detailed Disaster Plans, which helped them manage difficulties as they arose—such as power outages, flooded car parks, and restricted access. While we all hope not to see another cyclone in South-East Queensland any time soon, now may be a good time to consider putting a plan in place while the experience is still fresh. You know your building better than anyone, but if it would be helpful, we can provide your committee or building manager with some general guidance to support the creation of a tailored plan.

During times of crisis, we understand how important communication is. That’s why we decided to send out daily updates with the most relevant and timely information available. While we know these updates may not have solved the problems you faced, we hoped they offered some guidance and early warnings where possible. The Cyclone Alfred daily communications were well-received, with over 60% of our lot owners reading the emails, and we appreciated the thoughtful and constructive feedback many of you shared—thank you for taking the time.

On a more positive note, we are continuing to enhance our digital services. We’ve recently launched mySSKB, a desktop version of the SSKB App, and have already had 1,200 owners sign up in the first two weeks. Currently, around 18,000 owners are using the SSKB App. However, we’ve noticed that about 20% are using outdated versions and may be missing out on the latest features. If you haven’t updated in a while, you can easily do so via the App Store.

We appreciate your resilience during this challenging time and remain committed to supporting you as recovery efforts continue.
