4 Tips to Prepare Your Strata Building for El Niño – NSW

El Niño is a prolonged weather event that brings drier and hotter conditions. The Bureau of Meteorology declared that an El Niño event is underway for Australia . Consequently, heightening risks of high temperatures and increasing the likelihood of natural fires throughout Australia.  In the wake of this declaration, it is important to be prepared for the changes this can bring. Tweed Heads/Northern NSW strata residents have a significant role to play in preparing for El Niño, in partnership with the Owners Corporation and your Owners Corporation Management, such as SSKB. Here are the 4 tips to prepare your strata building for El Niño.

1. Water Conservation:

It is important to actively reduce water consumption. This involves addressing leaks, installing water-efficient appliances, and adopting water-wise practices in individual units and shared spaces. These efforts help conserve water resources during El Niño’s dry periods. Work with your Community Manager and Owners Corporation to ensure that the adoption of these water saving methods complies with legislation and By Laws.

2. Property Maintenance:

As per Legislation, and recommended by SSKB, residents should take personal responsibility for maintaining their individual strata properties. To ensure your individual strata property is El Niño ready it is important to maintain your property to a high standard. This can be done by clearing gutters of leaves and natural debris. As well as ensuring gardens and potted plants are kept clear of dried leaves and sticks. Both of which will help mitigate fire risks. For the purpose of comfort in the increased heat. You will want to ensure your chosen temperature control methods are working sufficiently. Aircon and ceiling fans can make the effects of El Niño more comfortable for your household.

3. Fire Safety:

El Niño will bring an increased risk of bush fires and natural fires to New South Wales. As well as increasing the severity of accidental fires. Thus, it is important to be vigilant about fire safety measures and equipment. In both common property and your individual strata property. Familiarise yourself with the location of fire extinguishers, fire alarms, fire escape paths and other fire safety procedures in your Owners Corporation. If you find damaged or malfunctioning equipment, report it to your Strata Manager for action.

4. Stay Informed, Stay Prepared:

Stay informed about the property’s emergency evacuation plan and updates related to El Niño. This can be done by following your preferred news channel and keeping up with the weather warnings. Share and discuss this information with fellow Owners Corporation residents. Prepare an emergency kit for your household, including essential supplies, important documents, and medications. Familiarise yourself with the property’s emergency plan and assembly points. During drills or real emergencies, follow instructions and assist other residents, particularly those who may require help.
