Herbs At Home – Apartment Friendly Plants

SSKB Strata Managers looks at herb gardens in apartments

One of the compromises of apartment living is not having your own personal green space.

But even the most avowed ‘brown thumb’ would concede that having a thriving herb garden would be a handy addition.

Best of all, herb gardens are easy to grow and take up surprisingly little space.

Choose your favourite culinary herbs to have on hand. Some of the most popular are basil, sage, coriander, chives and mint; brushing past a pot of rosemary releases lovely aromatics to savour and may even help with memory.

The secret to success is finding the right location. A sun-filled spot with a northerly aspect would be ideal. Herbs do best in good soil, but be careful not to overwater or over fertilise.

Wait until the herbs are about 15cm tall before harvesting (most tube stock bought from nurseries are close to that height) and be sure to take not more than a quarter of the plant. Allow it to grow back to about 15cm again before re-harvesting.

If there are herbs you use frequently, consider potting more than one and keep them in rotation.

A herb garden needn’t take up much space and below we have a series of clever ideas to turn the herbs into a feature that doesn’t take up precious floor space.

Wall gardens – create your own herb wall garden either on a balcony or in a sunny inside location. Best of all there are many ways to create the effect from using a recycle pallets to the chic ultra modern, depending on your personal style. A herb wall can also be turned into a feature.

Grow upside down – if wall space is at a premium herbs nestle nicely in a window sill or even hang upside down.

Go hydroponic – herbs thrive in nutrient rich environment and a compact hydroponic system is perfect for apartments. You can even buy kits that include an electronic control panel to manage lights and nutrient levels.
